Banana Fiber Program
The Banana Fiber Program is a collaborative initiative spearheaded by Manga HEART (Health Education Africa Resource Team) and the Centre for Community Mobilization and Empowerment (CECOME) in Nyamira and Kisii counties, with the support of the International Solidarity Foundation (ISF). The project is designed to empower women by providing them with valuable skills in handcraft production using banana fiber and other sustainable materials. Through this initiative, the project aims to enhance household economic stability and mitigate the vulnerability of women to gender-based violence (GBV).
Main Activities
-
Training Workshops: The project conducts comprehensive training sessions where women learn the techniques of extracting and processing banana fiber into various products. These workshops cover everything from basic skills to advanced handcraft techniques.
-
Material Provision: Participants are provided with the necessary materials and tools to start their handcraft work. This includes access to banana fiber, dyes, weaving tools, and other essential supplies.
-
Market Linkages and Support: The project assists women in identifying market opportunities for their products. This involves creating connections with local and regional markets, organizing exhibitions, and facilitating participation in trade fairs to showcase their products.
-
Awareness and Sensitization: Alongside skill development, the project runs programs to raise awareness about GBV and promote gender equality. These sessions aim to educate both women and the broader community about the importance of economic empowerment and the detrimental effects of GBV.
-
Monitoring and Evaluation: Continuous monitoring and evaluation activities are carried out to assess the progress of the project and its impact on participants' lives. Feedback mechanisms are established to ensure the project remains responsive to the needs of the women involved.
Objectives and Goals
-
Skill Development and Empowerment: Equip women with the technical skills needed to produce high-quality handcraft items from banana fiber. This includes training in weaving, dyeing, and crafting various products such as baskets, mats, carpets, and carrier bags.
-
Economic Sustainability: Provide an additional income stream for households, contributing to overall economic stability.
-
Reduction of GBV Vulnerability: Reduce the vulnerability of women to GBV through financial independence to enhance women's ability to make decisions and increase their stand within the household and community, thereby reducing instances of abuse and exploitation.
Expected Outcomes
-
Increased Income for Women: By acquiring handcraft skills, women can produce and sell goods, thereby increasing their household income. This financial boost can lead to improved living conditions and greater economic security.
-
Enhanced Self-Esteem and Independence: As women gain new skills and contribute economically, their self-esteem and sense of independence are expected to improve, leading to more empowered individuals who can advocate for their rights.
-
Reduction in GBV Incidents: With greater economic stability and awareness about GBV, the incidence of violence against women is anticipated to decrease. Women will be better equipped to resist and report abuse, and communities will become more supportive of gender equality.
-
Sustainable Community Development: The project promotes the use of environmentally friendly materials, contributing to sustainable community development. It also fosters a culture of creativity and innovation, which can have long-term positive effects on local economies.
